Welcome to THE COMIC’S DAUGHTER WRITES, my new blog, as 0f 10/5/17.
The fact that you found this site, makes me happier than a pig rolling in shit.
As you may have guessed from the title, I AM the daughter of a stand-up comedian. Thank you for your condolences. It was not easy being a punch line. As such, I wrote about that unusual life (and a murder, circa 1963), in my compelling, funny and dramatic book, The Comic’s Daughter: A Chicago Tale. Being the only daughter of a stand-up comedian is a private club. For instance, if you assembled Rain Pryor, Kelly Carlin, Melissa Rivers and myself into group therapy, we’d most likely have some similar stories. Growing up with non-stop jokes, along with lessons on the importance of good timing, informed my life, my writing and my id.
OPINIONS UNLIMITED arises out of a quirky idea that was bandied about between me, and my former writing partner. For years and years, we joked about setting up a sidewalk kiosk (like a lemonade stand) in Santa Monica, CA, with a giant sign: OPINIONS UNLIMITED. Our goal was to offer our opinion to anyone passing by, on any issue, for a donation. A kind of first-person Dear Abby. We never did set up that stand, and a few years back, she passed away from cancer. “Opinions Unlimited” therefore, is an ode to my friend. That, and a tribute piece entitled The Power of Show Repair – which is in the “stories/stuff” section.
I am a storyteller by nature. I grew up with a storyteller, and as such, stories (and people) are a passion – it is second nature. In addition, I find stories in almost every situation, and with almost every person I encounter. If I hadn’t begun a blog and created a “basket” for all these encounters and musings, I would have exploded. It is rare that I don’t have a first-person anecdote about SOMETHING. Ask my friends. No doubt some of them think I’m obnoxious, and I probably AM. As an example, I was in Ralphs the other day, browsing fruits and vegetables, when all of a sudden I heard a woman say, “We just got back from McCall, Idaho.” Well….as it turns out, I once spent a glorious week in McCall, riding on a pontoon boat and watching black bears eat my garbage. Like I said, it’s obnoxious…
Choose your pleasure. I broke up the blog pieces by subjects, to make it easy and accessible.
The Comics Daughter Writes is an opportunity to produce, direct and star in my own production.
Here it goes…I hope you enjoy.
